Lot 107: 1966 Mercedes- Benz 250 SE Cabriolet
The Sport Car Auction, Coys (9th December 2006)
When Mercedes-Benz replaced the popular Wlll 220 series in 1966, the first S Class range was born. Much of the mechanical specification remained as before, but a new sleeker bodyshell with lower roof and waist lines and a larger glass area was much more modern in design than the dated, finned wing appearance of its predecessor. Supplementing the saloons there were, as always, both coupé and cabriolet derivatives. All of these W108 models, however, shared similar all independent suspension, but wishbone/coil spring at the front together with a coil sprung swing axle at the rear; all round disc brakes and power assisted steering were also standard equipment. Power was provided by a choice of three overhead camshaft six cylinder engines; for the 250S, the 2,496cc motor produced 130bhp via twin carburetors with the 250SE benefiting from Bosch fuel injection and an increase in output to 150bhp, while in the 300SE capacity was raised to 2,996cc and power to 200bhp. Transmission was invariably an automatic four-speed unit. All provided respectable performance with the 250SE, capable of 118mph and 0-60mph in around 11 seconds. As with all Mercedes-Benz models, build quality was to a very high standard, and the W108 range proved immensely popular until superseded in early 1970s.The luxurious and well appointed convertible model of the range can only be compared to the Rolls-Royce Corniche, both in its creature comforts, road presence and quality. The car has had only three registered owners from new who all owned the car for a considerable time; the first owner for a period of 23 years, the second for 9 years and the present owner since 1998. The current diligent owner has travelled some 7,000 troublefree km in this luxury convertible, no doubt receiving envious glances from fellow motorists as he drove along. From 1997 to 1999 the car underwent a comprehensive restoration and is still resplendent in the classic colour combination of maroon with brown leather interior. The car also benefits from a stainless exhaust system, which has been fitted in 1999. Where else can you find a luxury convertible with accommodation for four? Offered with German Historic registration documents.
