Lot 029: 1960 AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000 MKI
Sale Of Motor Cars, H&H Sales Limited (25th July 2007)
A significant step in terms of 'Big Healey' evolution and foundation block for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars, the 3000 MKI was introduced in March 1959. Capable of nearly 120mph, it was powered by an enlarged 2912cc version of the BMC C-Series straight six engine that developed some 124bhp and 167lbft of torque. Although, equipped with a similar chassis design to its 100/6 forebear, the new model enjoyed notably better braking thanks to the adoption of Girling front discs. Fitted with wire wheels and adjustable front seats as standard, it was available in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 (BT7) guises. Finished in Old English White with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly "an original UK right-hand drive car that was exported to New Zealand in 1962 but repatriated some thirty-three years later", 'FSJ 847' is understood to have covered "just 3,000 careful miles since the completion of a 7,000 hour restoration". Consequently said to "drive beautifully" and to possess "perfect panel fit and shut lines", the 2+2 rides on wire wheels. Only offered for sale "due to a change of plans", this stunning Big Healey is accompanied by a MOT certificate valid until September 1st 2007.
