Lot 152: 1958 Lambretta LD150
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
Manufactured by the Italian industrial giant Innocenti, the Lambretta scooter gained instant acceptance in the immediate post-war years, its cleanliness and convenience in particular appealing to those who regarded the true motorcycle with suspicion. In the UK, Italian scooters were adopted as favoured transport by the Mods, becoming one of the enduring style icons of the 1960s. Predecessor of the Li and TV series, the LD arrived in 125cc form in 1951 and became available with 150cc engine three years later. The LD 150s air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine produced 6bhp (1.2bhp more than the 125) giving the model a top speed of around 50mph. LD production continued until the end of the 1950s. Acquired by Professor Ehn in 1978, this original and unrestored LD has been ridden on numerous rallies, the last such occasion being in the year 2000, and in between times has been on display in the Museum. The machine is offered with Austrian Typenschein confirming matching frame/engine numbers.
