Lot 049: 1959 JAGUAR XK150 FIXED HEAD COUPE
Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (27th February 2008)
The final version of the XK sportscar line and the last Jaguar to carry a separate chassis, the XK150 was introduced in May 1957. While its use of independent torsion-bar front suspension, a 'live' leaf-sprung rear axle and rack and pinion steering mirrored the practice of its XK140 predecessor the new model benefited from all-round Dunlop disc brakes. Stylistically, it was brought up-to-date with less ostentatious curves and a larger, wrap-around single-piece windscreen. The dashboard too was altered eschewing wood trim for padded leather. With the E-type still very much under development, Jaguar were keen to sustain the sporting reputation that their remarkable five Le Mans victories had earned them. To this end, the XK150 could be had in both 3442cc and 3781cc guises and to normal or tuned 'S' specification. With power outputs ranging from 190bhp for the base 3.4 up to 265bhp for the ultimate 3.8S, performance was always an XK150 strong point. Equipped with four-speed manual gearboxes as standard, even the 'slowest' versions were said to be good for over 130mph. Beginning life as a 3.4 litre automatic 'Special Equipment' model (hence the 'S' prefix to its chassis number), this particular left-hand drive example was upgraded to 3.8 litre power and four-speed manual transmission as part of a "frame off restoration" carried out between 2002 and 2005. As well as the extensive mechanical overhaul, the Jaguar received attention to its brake system, wiring harness and clutch etc. While, cosmetically it was enhanced by a bare metal respray, interior retrim, replacement front / rear bumpers and new wire wheels / tyres. Further benefiting from a thorough waxoyl treatment, the XK150 is said to be "on the button" and to have covered approximately 2,000 miles since completion.
