Lot 120: 1940 Indian 45ci Sport Scout

Motorcycles featuring Michael Corbin Collection, Bonhams & Butterfields (3rd May 2008)

Formerly the property of Steve McQueen
1940 Indian 45ci Sport Scout
Engine no. FDO406
A smaller Indian v-twin model, the 37ci (600cc) Scout, joined the 61ci Powerplus in 1920. The newcomer soon gained a deserved reputation for durability; so much so that You cant wear out an Indian Scout became its advertising slogan. Contributing to this longevity was the use of gears for the primary drive rather than the customary chain, and this unusual feature would endure until 1933. A 45ci (750cc) variant was first offered in 1927 and then in April 1928 the 101 Scout appeared featuring a revised 750cc flat head engine in a new, longer-wheelbase frame. This sporting machine would prove an immense success for the Springfield firm, so much so that its replacement in 1931 by a heavier Chief-framed model was greeted with dismay. Introduced in 1934, the Sport Scout went some way towards retrieving the Scouts reputation, featuring a lighter keystone (open) frame and European-style girder forks. Lighter and faster than its immediate predecessor, the Sport Scout was just what enthusiasts and racers had been crying out for, and today remains a favorite among discerning Indian owners and riders.

Formerly the property of celebrated movie actor, the late Steve McQueen, this Sport Scout was sold at the McQueen Estate Auction held at the Imperial Palace Hotel, Las Vegas on November 25/25th 1984 (Lot 627) and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Terry and Chad McQueen. Mike Corbin bought Steves Sport Scout from the auction purchaser, Joel Sandstrom, of Hollister, CA in May 2000. Additional accompanying documentation includes the 1984 bill of sale; auction bidder card; assorted sale-related correspondence; shipping details; DMV Vehicle Transfer Form; and condition report. An exciting opportunity to acquire an ex-Steve McQueen Sport Scout modified in the stripped-down and purposeful bobber style that the great man favored. Sold on a Bill of Sale.
