Lot 1010: 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Convertible
Quail Lodge Motor Cars, Bonhams & Butterfields (19th August 2005)
If you wanted to own a Mercedes-Benz in 1971, you had several model choices. At entry level was the comfortable, 220 series four-door sedan, with a choice of gasoline or diesel engines. The line was topped by the magnificent 600 limousine, with the 250, 280 and 300 series sedans in the middle, along with the dashing 280SL sports car.
Those buyers after performance alone, opted for the 280SL, while those who wanted both high performance and luxury frequently chose the 280SE 3.5. The standard 280 sedans featured the sturdy 169 horsepower overhead camshaft straight-six. For those desiring more power, the coupe or convertible could be ordered with a 213 horsepower V-8. For 1971, 213 horsepower meant that the 3,687 offered good—if not spectacular—performance.
The year was more than half over when a Reno, Nevada, physician took delivery of his new 280SE 3.5 with automatic transmission. It was finished in blue with a blue top and trimmed in cherry red leather. Other equipment included power windows, fog lights and Becker radio.
With the current owner since 1975, this desirable Mercedes convertible has been well cared for over many miles. It has been repainted, fitted with a new top, and rolls on good Michelin whitewall tires. The blue Benz starts and runs well. It also keeps its cool thanks to a replacement radiator. After 34 year it still retains its original top boot, jack and tool kit. It also comes with front seat covers and extensive documentation.
A very nice driver of a much sought-after Mercedes-Benz convertible, it is in very good mechanical condition, but will benefit from some attention to its interior and heating controls.
Without reserve.
