Lot 123: 1974 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible
Summer 2005, Coys (1st August 2005)
Bill Allen from the Styling Department at the Crewe factory had been responsible for the timeless elegance of the H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward two door saloons based on the Silver Shadow's standard coachwork. In 1971 just after the company had been forced to call in the receiver over financial trouble associated with problems in the jet engine production, the two door models were given an independent identity of their own when the Rolls-Royce Corniche was announced. This bold action was well founded, because motor car production was solvent and profitable. The new Corniche with a low-loss exhaust system, tuned engine, new facia and new spun stainless steel wheel trims differed in technical specification as well as in outward appearance from the basic models. The Corniche received a 10% power increase over the four door Silver Shadow that increased top speed to 120mph and dropped the 0-60mph acceleration to 9.6 seconds. In 1972 the suspension was completely redesigned and radial tyres were fitted, greatly enhancing the car's handling. In its day, there was simply no more luxurious and flamboyant way to go top-down motoring. This particular Corniche was produced in 1974 and finished in sky blue with dark blue interior. The car has been with its present owner for the last 3 years. While in his possession it has been thoroughly maintained with invoices in the region of 10,000-15,000. The car has also benefited from a bare metal respray and all chrome work has been re-chromed, still with a 16 month guarantee. BBK 96M is described by the vendor to be in very good condition and comes with a large history file and a current MoT valid until April of next year.
