Lot 125: Austin Healey Sprite Pickup
Classic - Collectors and Historic Motor Cars, Barons (9th December 2008)
Any self respecting Sprite aficianado would recognise the name Clive Baker. For those of you who do not have encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Sprite, then here is a short resume of the mans past career, as an Austin Healey Works Driver, between 1960 and 1970: 5 Targa Florios, 7 Le Mans, 6 Sebring 12 hours, 2 Daytona 24 hours, 2 Watkins Glen 6 hours, 8 Nurburgring 1000kms, 6 Nurburgiring 100kms, the gentleman was also a Works Driver for BMC/Cooper, Chevron, Mazda and March, plus competed in Nascar and Sprint Cars in the USA.
Offered here is a unique Austin Healey Sprite, which was built by world renowned specialist Brian Wheeler as a parts carrier when he was building the recreation of the Healey SR Le Mans, which Clive Baker drove in 1968. It is built to a very high standard and retains a 948cc engine but has a 5 speed gearbox.
Described as an extremely sound vehicle, it is said to be in good mechanical order and to drive very well. It is a working vehicle and not a museum piece and has been kept as such.
With its ownership and builders credentials, this Austin Healey is a unique vehicle and offers the collector a rare opportunity. It is only being sold by Mr. Baker because he now finds it difficult to get in and out of the car. As a promotional vehicle for an Austin Healey specialist or any classic restorer, it offers great potential.
