Lot 003: 1925 Willys Overland Model 91 Tourer
Collectors Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (8th June 2008)
A rival to the likes of the ubiquitous Ford Model T and Dodge 4, the Overland Model 91 was introduced in March 1923. Priced at $525 and marketed as 'The Car that Satisfies', it was based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with the Triplex 3-point cantilever spring system (which utilised angle-mounted quarter-elliptics for each axle) and rear-wheel drum brakes. Initially powered by a choice of 2.3litre (27hp) or 2.5litre (30hp) four-cylinder engines allied to three-speed siding-gear transmission, the Model 91 played host to a variety of open and closed coachwork. Seemingly fitted with the larger powerplant as standard from 1924 onwards, the Overland proved a well engineered, dependable and versatile design. A strong sales success both at home and abroad, it remained in production until May 1926. Finished in yellow over black with brown upholstery, this particular example appears to have begun life Down Under (or so an accompanying Queensland Government registration document would imply). Forming part of the David Lynch collection in recent years and dry stored during that time, it rides on wooden artillery wheels and sports a full-length hood. Judged to be "generally sound", the Model 91 will nevertheless require recommissioning prior to use. An affordable Vintage Tourer, this well travelled Willys Overland is offered for sale with UK registration document and expired MOT certificate.
