Lot 637: Jaguar XK150 S Open Tourer
Concours & Auction Weekend, Coys (18th July 2009)
In 1957 Jaguar launched its final version of the successful and glamorous XK range, the XK150. The last of the XK range could be easily identified by its more bulbous appearance and a less pronounced wing line. Modern styling touches included a revised front grille; full width deeper bumpers appeared as well as a deeper one piece windscreen. Mechanical changes included optional disc brakes; the XK150 was the first to carry Dunlop disc brakes as standard following their lengthy development on Jaguar sports-racing cars which came complete with servo assistance. The brakes had always been criticised on earlier XK models. Engine power had now increased to 210bhp on the 3.4 litre "SE" XK150, the standard car had 190bhp.
As before, with earlier models, the drophead Coupe version of the XK150 sat at the top of the range and commanded a price of £ 1,969 7s for the SE version. Produced in 1960 this XK150 is a desirable 'S' model that has benefited from a full restoration to concours condition in recent years.
The car was originally supplied by Henleys Ltd of London as an original right hand drive model with a manual/overdrive gearbox, details of which are supported by a production record trace certificate. Having been restored by J.D Classics, the car is described as in excellent condition throughout. As with all 'S' models the engine is fitted with triple SU carburettors with straight port C type cylinder head and a higher compression delivering a believed 250 bhp! Power is fed through a smooth four speed manual box fitted with overdrive which is reported to be in fine order. Finished in the attractive colour combination of cream with red leather interior, WSJ399 would make a fine addition to any collection
