Lot 207: 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo

It was BMW's 1600 saloon of 1966, with new two door medium-sized bodywork, that really sealed the German manufacturer's path on the road to success. Already the company's four cylinder, overhead camshaft engine and McPherson strut front and coil spring/trailing arm rear suspension had been proven in its larger four door saloons, and when this was allied to the new 02 Series 1600 it was a recipe well received.Faster derivatives soon joined the 85bhp 1600: first came the twin carburettor 105bhp 1600ti and then the extremely popular 2002 launched in January 1968. The 2002ti, with its twin carburettors, boasted 120bhp and a top speed of 115mph. To combat the Porsche 911 threat, BMW used the competition only 2002TiK for Group 5 racing ( K denoting a KKK turbocharger). At Le Mans a privately entered 2002Ti secured the GTS class win in 1975, beating several seemingly more powerful cars in the process.The car on offer today is the 'production' version of the 2002 Turbo, which whilst boasting more realistic performance figures than the Gp5 racer, lacks nothing in the impact it makes on the observer. With it's moulded bumpers and aggressive stance the 2002 Turbo has looks which admirably convey an impression of the performance of which these 'suburban supercars' are capable.Coming from a small collection of European sports cars, this Porsche beater of its time is in very original condition demanding some minor recommissioning or it would serve as a splendid base car for rebuilding it into a proper historic race or rally car. Unrestored and unmolested, it is just THE car for an easy restoration, almost guaranteeing a successful road or track career.
