Lot 015: Ford Model Y 8hp

The Model Y was the first Ford specifically designed for markets outside the USA. It was powered by a 933cc 8hp sidevalve engine and was in production in England from 1932 until 1937 although it was also produced in France, Germany, Australia and Japan. Available in two and four door versions, in June 1935 the two door model was the only fully-equipped car ever to sell in Britain for just �100. Although of American design, the Eight took the British market by storm and made a major dent in the sales figures of Austin, Morris, Singer and Hillman, taking over 50% of the 8hp market. The suspension was by the traditional Ford transverse leaf springs front and rear and the engine drove the rear wheels through a three speed gearbox which, right from the start, featured synchromesh between the top two ratios. The maximum speed was just under 60mph and fuel consumption was 32mpg. Also offered was an attractive 5cwt van which proved very popular with small businesses. Dating from 1933, this particular Eight had a full engine rebuild costing �775 in July 2003, which included cylinder rebore, crankshaft regrind, cylinder head refaced, cylinder block refaced, new pistons, main bearings, timing chain, camshaft and followers. Judging by the condition of the interior, it is fairly obvious that the seats have been reupholstered in recent times. The paintwork is said to be "acceptable" and the car reportedly "drives very well." It is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale.
