Lot 390: 1970 Jensen Interceptor MkI Saloon
Collectors' Motor Cars & Automobilia, Bonhams (28th February 2005)
With the Interceptor’s introduction in 1967, Jensen switched from glassfibre to steel for its car bodies, while beneath the skin the preceding C-V8 model’s chassis, running gear and 6,276cc Chrysler V8 engine remained substantially unchanged. With 325bhp (SAE) and 425lb/ft of torque on tap, performance was more than adequate, The Motor magazine recording a top speed of 140mph with 100mph arriving in 19 seconds. Leather upholstery, reclining front seats and walnut veneer were all standard features, while automatic transmission - Chrysler’s excellent three-speed Torqueflite - was the choice of almost all buyers. Development was constant throughout the life of what would become known retrospectively as the Interceptor MkI, the MkII version arriving in October 1969 by which time 1,033 MkIs had been built.
This right-hand-drive, automatic-transmission MkI benefits - we are advised - from expenditure in excess of £20,000 over the course of the past eight years. The vendor acquired the car in October 2000, since when various works have been completed. Recent refurbishment carried out by recognised Jensen specialists Cropedy Bridge Garage has included engine work and replacing the windscreen and Webasto sunroof, while other new parts fitted include the fuel pump, ignition leads, radiator, fans and stainless-steel exhaust system. The vendor advises us that the braking system is unfinished - the front brake calipers are not fitted but supplied with the car - and that only relatively minor other works are needed to complete the rebuild. Finished in white with unmarked black leather upholstery, the vehicle benefits from a restored, rust-free chassis, various new body panels and a complete re-spray, with new veneers and new Wilton carpeting to the interior. It is offered with sundry invoices and Swansea V5.
