Lot 023: 1984 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 CE

Introduced in 1975, the Mercedes-Benz W123 series perpetuated the marque's enviable reputation for engineering integrity. Well built with a sense of solidity missing from today's model line-up, the W123 cars featured all-round independent coil-sprung suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and power-assisted steering. Devoid of exterior plastic trim and regarded by some as the last of the 'chrome era' Mercedes, W123s have begun to attract a cult following. Available from 1976 onwards, the flagship two-door coupe used a shortened version of its saloon sibling's platform. An elegant and neatly resolved design boasting pillarless side windows it could be had with a choice of 2.3 litre four-cylinder or 2.8 litre six-cylinder engines. Reputedly capable of 125mph, the fuel-injected 280 CE remained in production until 1985. Finished in maroon with blue cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair" (interior trim), "good" (chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "very good" (engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment) condition. Riding on alloy wheels, this comparatively late 280 CE is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2008 and road tax valid until August 2008.
