Lot 233: 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Competition
Autosport 2006, Coys (14th January 2006)
Here is an accessible entry into quality historic race events backed by a worthy provenance. '105 UEA' is well known to the 'Alfisti' as one of the earliest RHD Giulia Sprint GT's in existence. It has been a competition car for a great many years and has been a regular supporter of Top Hat events since the series started in 1999. Prepared and maintained by marque specialist Andrew Thorogood, this car is currently in HSCC HRSR specification featuring 2-litre running gear throughout. The steel shell was restored several seasons ago and lightweight fibreglass panels were fitted at that time (Bonnet, boot and doors). The engine runs on twin 45mm Weber carburettors and pushes out 168 bhp @ 6,500 rpm at the wheels. This copious amount of power drives through a 5-speed 'short 5th' gearbox to a competition specification limited slip rear differential. Brakes are uprated ATE-type from the 2-litre model and the car boasts the fitment of safety equipment to FIA specification. The car also comes with 8 x Cromodora 5-spokes alloy wheels. The author was privileged to partner the vendor in this car at one of Top Hat's endurance events at Chimay in 2003 and can report that the car's handling was superior to that of his own GTA! More recently the vendor took a Top Hat class win at Spa in 2005, reporting that the car handled as well on the wet track as it did in the dry - a most encouraging fact to know at so daunting a circuit. As the car stands in its current specification, this car remains eligible for Top Hat 'Groovy Baby!' and 'Sebring Salute' series along with the HSCC Historic Racing Saloons Register championship in 2006. Thus the 2006 season could take the new owner to a plethora of UK and European events. It is also well worth noting that the car could easily be converted to FIA specification - especially being based on an original 1964 chassis and the competitive pricing of this car allows economic access along this route.
