Lot 340: 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12 Roadster
Sports, Competition and Collectors' Motor cars, Bonhams (15th March 2008)
Following in the illustrious wheel-tracks of the 6-cylinder Series 1 (1961-1968) and Series 2 (1969-1971) Jaguar E Types came the V12 Series 3 which was manufactured in Coventry 1971-1975. Powered by a new 5.3-litre 12-cylinder engine with up-rated brakes and power-steering was standard, the final version of what had become an international success story was available in roadster or 2+2 coupe form, both of which utilised the longer-wheelbase 2+2 floor-pan, the short-wheelbase, fixed head body option of the S2 being discontinued. After nearly 8000 of this, the last of the E Type line had been made, S3 production ceased in 1975.
First leaving the Browns Lane works in 1973 as a right-hand drive fixed head in red, 4S57161 was comprehensively restored in the early 1990s with a roadster monocoque and new body panels painted in BRG. The photo-record album of the rebuild supplied with the car not only shows the high standard of work carried out, but also contains the original factory-supplied chassis and body ID plates. The current 1S51958 chassis number, on the vehicle since the rebuild, as well as the 7S12886SB number for the 5343cc engine which was also rebuilt during the refurbishment work, are both shown in the V5C. Whilst the transmission is the preferred 4-speed manual gearbox and the open car sits on chrome wire wheels, the most desirable combination for any S3 E Type.
After 10,927 miles, the mileage displayed since restoration, panel condition and fit are exemplary, paintwork and chrome appear to be virtually blemish-free, the tan leather interior presents well and the under-bonnet and suspension components are in particularly good cosmetic order. The current MOT is valid until June and, because of the year of first registration, this roadster is eligible for an historic vehicle tax disc.
