Lot 122: 1952 Daimler Barker Special Sports Coupe
Spring Auction, Coys (20th April 2005)
With the outbreak of World War II, Daimler, like so many car manufacturers, turned its production to the war effort, but after 1945 car production once again got underway. One of the first models off the line was the DB18, a direct descendent of the 15, powered by a 70bhp 2.5 litre straight six engine allied to the four-speed pre-selector transmission, the combination providing lively and responsive performance. Like the 15, it shared a similar chassis with independent coil spring/wishbone front suspension, a live leaf sprung rear axle and all-round drum brakes. Inside, it boasted the traditional high quality polished walnut and leather interior and was a smooth and refined motor car. Either open or closed coachwork was available from a variety of specialists, notably Barker, whose drophead coup body styles proved most popular. The Barker Coupe featured dramatic lines and a two-tone colour scheme with only 608 examples made. This particular Barker Special Sports Coupe is described by the vendor to be in very good condition. Work was carried out in 1998/99 and included a full body off restoration with a full mechanical overhaul, including a new cylinder head and was repainted in burgundy over gold. At the same time the seats, including the unique 'Optional Direction' rear , were retrimmed in tan Connolly leather. The hood and cover were renewed in mohair and replaced, along with all 5 cross-ply tyres replaced with radials some 500 miles ago. Paintwork and panels are still in good order, the 2522cc 6 cylinder engine excellent, 4-speed pre-selector perfect, electrical equipment very good and the interior, of course, is as good as new.The previous owner enjoyed 3,000 trouble-free miles on the JEC Tour of South Africa in 2000 and the current owner enjoyed a 1,000 mile hassle free tour of the Peak District & Yorkshire Dales last year. SFO 665 has covered 64,000 miles which is believed to be genuine. The car comes complete with current MoT valid until 2006, handbooks, service manuals and receipts.
