Lot 409: 1972 Honda 72cc Dax ‘Monkey Bike’
Pioneer, Vintage & Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (27th April 2008)
With the launch of the CZ100 in 1960, Honda created the class of machine known as ‘monkey bikes’, so called because of their diminutive stature. The power unit was the C100 step-thru’s reliable four-stroke single, and an ultra-short wheelbase, small wheels and a vestigial fuel tank were all features of a machine which, in the case of the folding handlebar version, could be fitted into the boot of car. A 72cc version, the ST70 Dax, with slightly larger and more practical frame was introduced in 1969 and renamed CT70 for 1971. This Dax comes with its original logbook, which records one James Gold as the only owner. Otherwise, nothing is known of its history or mechanical condition, although we are advised that the engine starts and runs well.
