Lot 119: 1995 Dodge Viper Venom
Spring Auction, Coys (20th April 2005)
Chrysler's primary goal with the Viper was to build a vehicle that concentrated on performance above all else. Their benchmark: to go from 0 to 100 and back to 0 in under 15 seconds. The Viper GTS Coupe and the Viper RT/10 Roadster were both born of the same vision. The car was originally introduced as a concept car to much fanfare and acclaim at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The first-generation Viper RT/10 Roadster was designed for the aggressive, seat-of -the-pants driver. When the decision was made to transform the Viper concept to reality, the vehicle exuded bold, powerful and capable characteristics that established it as performance leader among American manufacturers.By 1998, 9,500 Vipers cruised the world's boulevards and racetracks, building a very strong and extremely enthusiastic owner core. The Viper has had great success on the circuit, capturing three consecutive (1998-2000) Le Mans 24-hour endurance class titles. They earned the FIA GT2 and GT World Championship in 1997, 1998 and 1999. A factory-backed Viper team entered the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 1999, earning a class victory in every race they entered, as well as the overall title and, in 2000, the Viper gained an historic overall win at the 24 Hours of Daytona, a third ALMS drivers' crown.Just in case 8 litres and over 500bhp and a top speed of 190mph were not quite enough, Hennessey Motorsport fitted the already monstrous Viper with a turbocharger and a number of other modifications. The result of this was that the car now produced 630bhp, travelled from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and had a top speed of 206 mph!!! These cars were aptly named, the Viper Venom. The car on offer today is one such rare beast. Finished in yellow with twin blue stripes, Cobra style, the car has been well maintained throughout its life with the file containing a number of main agent bills, and the vendor describes the car as in excellent order in every way. For those thrill seekers, looking for the ultimate in American muscle, the snakes most deadly aspect must surely be its VENOM!
