Lot 103: 1966 Honda S600/800 Roadster

Not surprisingly, considering that it was - and still is - the world�s largest producer of motorcycles, Honda�s first sports cars featured technology borrowed from its Grand Prix-winning two-wheelers. Engines were all-aluminium, twin-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder units with roller bearings used throughout, and the early S500 and S600 models employed a part-chain transmission. Introduced in 1966, the last-of-the-line S800 retained the separate chassis of its predecessors, but its final drive arrangements were more conventional, consisting of prop shaft and coil-sprung live rear axle. Revving to 8,000rpm and with 70bhp on tap, the S800 was good for almost 100mph and more than capable of giving the larger Sprites and Midgets a run for their money.

Delivered new to New Zealand and acquired by the current (third) owner in 2005, the car we offer is one of only 500 S600s built with the larger S800 engine. A right-hand drive model, it has covered only 2,600 miles (approximately 1,600 kilometres) in total and is reported as �totally original and virtually as new� apart from a new battery and (part) replacement exhaust system. This rare and historic Japanese sportscar comes complete with tool kit and is offered with (copy) owner�s manual, original service/maintenance manual, original sales brochure, recent service sheets, current MoT certificate and UK Swansea V5 registration document.
