Lot 507: 1991 Lamborghini LM 002
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (11th July 2008)
One of the most exciting and exclusive off-road vehicles ever conceived, the Lamborghini LM 002 resulted from the marriage of the Countach QV’s 5.2-litre V12 to a functionally - some would say brutally - styled ‘4x4’, the union resulting in scintillating performance and a top speed in the region of 125mph (200km/h). The engine drove through a five-speed ZF heavy-duty transmission and two-speed reduction gearbox offering a choice of ten speeds and two- or four-wheel drive. The distinctive five-door body was hand made in glassfibre (wings, bonnet, roof) and aluminium (doors) and the LM 002 came equipped in a manner one would expect from one of the world’s foremost supercar manufacturers, with sumptuous leather-trimmed interior and air conditioning as standard.
One of a mere 241 LM 002s produced between 1986 and 1992, chassis number ‘12236’ is one of the last 50 produced and was supplied new – it is believed – to Poland. Marque specialists, Lamborghini Wycombe bought the car in September 2005 and subjected it to a full rebuild at considerable cost. Purchased by the vendor in November 2005, ‘12236’ was extensively serviced again early in 2006 prior to participating in that year’s Gumball Rally, which took in Europe, Thailand and the USA. Following that gruelling event the car returned to Lamborghini Wycombe for a full service, engine overhaul, comprehensive engine bay detailing, exhaust system and much more besides, which was completed in September 2007. Five new tyres have been fitted also.
The vehicle comes with a history file containing sundry maintenance invoices and possesses a Swansea V5 registration document. Currently on SORN, it will be freshly taxed and MoT’d at time of sale. Finished in silver with contrasting red leather interior, ‘12236’ represents a rare opportunity to acquire a fine example of the vehicle likely to retain its unofficial ‘world’s fastest off-roader’ title well into the foreseeable future.
