Lot 211: Mercedes-Benz 600

Techno Classica, Coys (4th April 2009)

The Mercedes-Benz 600, introduced in September 1964, continued the tradition of the pre-war Grosser 770K which had been so popular with the highest echelons of the Nazi party: the 600 was an exclusive motor car built without compromise for royalty, heads of state, pop stars and, occasionally, mere tycoons who could afford the ultimate. Like its predecessor, the 600 was the last word in grandeur and opulence, and no creature comfort was omitted. With a 6.3 litre fuel injected V8 engine producing 300bhp at the wheels, the 600 was capable of over 120mph and 0-60mph in just 9.5 seconds, not bad for a car weighing some 7,0001b! There was a limited slip differential, servo steering and calliper brakes with vacuum servo at both ends. Other amenities included hydraulically operated windows, sunroof, glass partition, boot lit, horizontal/vertical movement and backrest angles of seats, and full electrically controlled air conditioning. Not even the Rolls-Royce Phantom boasted such a compliment of goodies, so it is hardly surprising that the 600 cost a whopping DM56,500 at the time of its launch, this figure having risen to DM144,100 by the time production ceased in 1981. Originally delivered on the 12th November 1964, this fine example is one of the first to roll off the Mercedes production line. Delivered new to Munich the car remained in Germany until 1978 when it was purchased and exported to Bern, Switzerland. The car remained in the same ownership for the next 31 years until it was sold earlier in 2009 due to old age of the lady owner. The car is in good condition throughout, finished in blue with a blue interior. The hydraulics are in fine condition and the sliding central glass partition is in good working order. The partition includes a drinks cabinet with glasses, Becker stereo controls and fold down writing tables with working reading lights. The car is supplied with EU taxes paid documents along with Swiss registration papers, the original vinyl wallet containing the original service book and original Mercedes-Benz map. In the boot you will find original Mercedes-Benz umbrellas, original tool roll and warning triangles. Still regarded as the definitive limousine of its era these popular and robust Mercedes are enjoying renewed popularity. What self respecting tycoon would be seen in anything else?
