Lot 028: Mini Cooper S MkIII

Brightwells Classic Car Auction, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (11th July 2007)

Born as the result of a collaboration between Issigonis and John Cooper, designer and builder of Formula 1 and rally cars, the legendary Mini Cooper was launched in 1961. The car featured a race-tuned engine, twin SU carburettors, a closer-ratio gearbox and front disc brakes, uncommon at the time in a small car. In line with the rest of the Mini range the Cooper models received the Mk II updates in 1967 consisting of a squarer grille, larger rear window and larger rear lamps. The more powerful Cooper S was launched in 1963 with a 1071cc or twin carb 1275cc engine which produced a healthy 76bhp and was good for 96mph although the car was so nippy and alive you always felt you were going twice as fast as you really were! Other improvements included larger servo-assisted disc brakes, twin fuel tanks, an oil cooler and modified drive shafts. The Mini Cooper S immortalised itself by winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967. The Cooper S lasted until 1971 when it was discontinued much to the disappointment Cooper fans everywhere. This particular 1972 car was bought by the current vendor when it was just a year old and he has cherished it ever since. In the intervening 34 years he has fitted many accessories including a sliding fabric sunroof, chrome wheel arches, front and rear bull bars, additional driving and side lamps, bullet mirrors and Minilite alloy wheels. The 62,000 miles on the clock is said to be the genuine mileage covered from new. Looking particularly sporty in black with white bonnet stripes, it is said to drive extremely well and to offer as much fun as you can possibly have on four wheels.
