Lot 103: 1977 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe

The Sports Car Auction, Coys (21st April 2007)

1977 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe
The motoring world eagerly awaited the arrival of an all new Jaguar in September 1968, and the XJ6 did not disappoint. In an era of square edge design, here was a beautiful and curvaceous saloon powered by the venerable twin overhead camshaft, straight six, XK engine, while beneath its steel monocoque chassis the race-bred, all independent suspension - wishbones/coil springs at the front, double coil springs/dampers at the rear - provided not only superb roadholding and handling , but also a class-dominating velvet smooth ride. It had been in production for less than a year when Sir William Lyons turned his attention to a two door coupe version of his sensational new saloon. After all, it was the Jaguar founder's favourite model at that time and the coupe is said to have become something of a pet project. The result was what many regard as one of the best looking models Browns Lane has ever produced. Although Lyons oversaw the whole project and build of that one and only prototype from start to finish, it was given a back seat until Series II XJ production was well underway. It was thus in Series II guise that the hendsome, two door model was first introduced. But despite being announced in 1973, it was to be April 1975, thanks to problems perfecting the rubber door seals on the pillar-less design, before production began. Directly aimed as competition to coupe offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and available with either 4.2 litre XK or 5.3 litre V12 engines, it was built in both Jaguar and Daimler versions. They were all great looking cars, stylish and very elegant, particularly with the side windows fully wound down. In fact, it arguably remains the ultimate expression of the XJ6. Vinyl roofs were common to all 8,217 six cylinder and 2,270 V12 engined coupes built, a ploy not necessarily aesthetically pleasing but very Seventies, to visually diminish the extra width of the C-pillars over the saloon. This 4.2 litre, right hand drive example would benefit from some mostly cosmetic refurbishment. Finished in dark blue with black hide interior, it is eligible for German historic papers and comes with a current German TuV certificate.
