The Porsche 356C was announced in the Summer of 1963 and was the final version of its type before the all-new six cylinder 911s were introduced in 1965. The steel chassis frame was basically unaltered from the 356B and the body was the T6 design with twin air intakes on the enlarged rear lid, a more ample windscreen and rear window, and a bigger front hood. The interior was virtually unchanged and in fact quite spartan when compared to other sports cars of the day. Just two engine options were available, either the 75bhp 1600C or 95bhp SC, the former fitted with twin Zenith carburetors rather than Solex. The most significant difference was in the braking as the C now had four wheel discs, which made a significant difference to the stopping power. In all, some 16,668 356Cs were built and they were praised for their quality of finish, panel fit, engineering integrity and roadholding capabilities.
This highly attractive 356 example has had the pleasure of residing in beautiful Rancho Santa Fe, California and from this location it was possible to pool talented local specialists in order to bring the car to the beautiful condition it is presented in today. Sadly the original engine has long since been separated from this coupe thus the choice was made to install a more powerful unit from a 912 which was rebuilt by Gitzenger Motor Works of Escondito, California. The sumptuous interior was done by Autos International and is beautifully appointed; it also compliments the faultless paintwork which has recently been refreshed along with the chrome. Panel fit is extremely good and the level of detailing is to show standard. Albeit driven briefly, this sprightly example clearly benefits from a few more horses and with the four wheel disc brakes in place, one can drive with verve in utmost confidence; this is a truly stunning 356.
