The Sharpe Family Collection, Christies (1 July 2005)

Pale blue with brown interior

Engine: one cylinder, two stroke, 191cc; Gearbox: four-speed and electric reverse; Suspension: independent rubber cones; Brakes: cable-operated drums. Central steering.

First offered in February 1953, the Regensburger Stahl- und Maschinenbau company's interpretation of the microcar theme must be considered one of the most curious yet successful designs in this unusual class. The tandem seating position allowed centralised weight distribution irrespective of the number of occupants, avoiding the flawed logic of the Isetta's lop-sided engine arrangement, and providing the little tricycle with handling characteristics that outclassed its contemporaries. By the middle of the decade the 173cc unit had been supplanted by Sachs' 200cc offering, acquiring at the same time a new 'bubbletop' roof and released as the KR200. The model was also made available in Britain for the first time; it was 1955.

Many modifications were made during the KR200's production run, both for the sake of refinement and cost-effectiveness. These included a redesign of the swing-arm and chaincase from chassis 65,186 onwards, and a move to Bosch Dynastart electrics (necessitated by Bosch's purchase of previous supplier Siba) from chassis 68,494 onwards.

Production continued until 1964, and so the example offered here was manufactured in the autumn of its run. It has stood in the museum for many years, and still wears its original blue paint although, while this is in reasonable condition, there is some evidence of corrosion around the edges of the panels. There is also slight damage to the Plexiglass roof and offside window. The brown interior is in original and highly restorable condition. The car is sold with V5 document.
