Lot 382: 1949 Fiat 1100 Cabriolet

Auto Moto D'Epoca, Coys (19 November 2005)

There were many coachbuilders who built pretty cabriolet bodies on this chassis including Ghia, Monviso and Bertone, whilst Viotti and Boneschi concentrated on the wooden 'Giardinetta' and Vignale the saloon cars. The car you see here is one of a tiny number of elegant cabriolets designed by Farina. It bears close resemblance to the Ferrari 166 Inter. In fact it is thought that Enzo Ferrari appealed against Farina using the design because it resembled his product too closely. Its second owner was American cycling team Salco who used the car as a promotional vehicle. It is bodied entirely in aluminium. The hand formed shell sits on a wire frame upon which the panels are shaped, the same construction method used by Touring to create the bodies of the Aston Martin DB4 and Maserati 3500 GT. Nearly all of the fixtures and fittings are unique to the car and have been painstakingly restored. Its owner found the car approximately 20 years requiring restoration. As the owner of a body shop, using period photographs he created a frame upon which to create new alloy panels. The car is the result of 20 years of work. The owner estimates the restoration took approximately 3000 hours. All of the trim is unique to the car which neccessitated reproducing many parts from scratch including the bumpers. It is currently fitted with an 1100 108C unit and is supplied with its original type engine which accompanies the car. The car is accompanied by numerous magazine articles, period photographs and body frame for creating panels. It is in stunning concours condition and a testament to the level of time and skill attributed to its restoration. A worthy contendor in next years Concorso Villa D'Este.
