Lot 403: 1951 Mercedes-Benz 170S Saloon

Fine Motor Cars and the Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2007)

During the 1920s Mercedes-Benz concentrated production on its exotic, six cylinder machines such as the SS/SSK models together with more mundane side valve, six cylinder models for the mass market. These were followed in 1930 by the Type 170 which, with a 1.7 litre four cylinder engine, was the smallest Mercedes-Benz model yet made; it also marked a Mercedes first in having all round independent suspension. In 1936 the 170 was superseded by the new 170V with tubular backbone chassis, which was to become the company's best selling pre-war model, continuing on sale until 1953, variations on the chassis including military applications such as the Kubelwagen and three seater cabriolet models. Power came from a 1,697cc engine producing 38bhp at 3,400rpm via a single Solex carburettor, mated to a four-speed gearbox. In 1949 the 170V was joined by the diesel engined 170D and the more luxurious 170S, both of which remained in production until 1955, including a two door four seat cabriolet.Enjoyed during the summer months only, this elegant Sindelfingen-built saloon has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration by a previous owner, he had the pleasure of ownership for some thirty years before it was sold to the vendor. Latterly, it has been maintained by a local central London garage and a full years MoT will be attributed to it, by them, prior to the sale. Transmission is through the desirable 4 speed manual gearbox and the black and grey paintwork presents extremely well. The interior woodwork is, as you would expect with the condition of the rest of the car, in extremely good order and overall combines to offer a sound and eminently usable classic post-war Mercedes-Benz.
