Lot 411: 1954 MG TF 1250cc

Fine Motor Cars and the Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2007)

MG's Midget range, which had begun with the M-type of 1928, had proven a runaway success that found favour with enthusiasts on and off the track on both sides of the Atlantic. The first post-war Midget had been the TC and the wider-bodied TD that replaced it was again similar, albeit with a new box section chassis. Braking was also improved with twin rather than single leading shoe drums while smaller disc type wheels replaced the previous wires, the lower overall gearing accommodated by the wider ratios of the four speed Y-Type gearbox. The MG TF first appeared at the 1953 Motor Show and was the ideal successor to the TD. A more refined car than the TD, it featured a sloping bonnet line and radiator, headlights grafted into the wings, sharply raked tail and individual bucket seats to replace the previous bench type. These considerable cosmetic improvements were coupled with an up-rated 1,250cc power unit.Finished in arguably one of the most attractive colour combinations of black with a red leather interior, PUP 155 is described as in very good condition throughout, which is not surprising as it has been in the ownership of none other than Mr Ditheridge of Suffolk. Mr Ditheridge is well known among the classic aviation community for restoring the legendary Spitfire and Hurricane airplanes. He has owned the car for the last 12 years, during which time he himself embarked on a comprehensive restoration. Surely for someone who is capable of bringing a Spitfire back to its former glory, this must have been a walk in the park by comparison. The result is nothing less than stunning and this charming sports car is certain to turn the heads of any dedicated classic car enthusiast. Offered with a V5 registration document and a new MoT test certificate, what could be better for the hot summer months?
