Lot 417: 1979 Aston Martin V8 Volante

Fine Motor Cars and the Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2007)

Aston Martin's customers had been clamouring for an eight-cylinder car for years, so the company designed a larger two-door saloon for V8 applications. The engine was not ready, however, so in 1967 the company released the DBS with the straight-six engine from the DB6. Two years later, Tadek Marek's V8 was ready, and Aston released the DBS V8. With the demise of the Vantage, the last of the straight-six model in 1973, the DBS V8, now called simply the Aston Martin V8, became the company's mainstream car for two decades. It was retired in favour of the Virage in 1990.The Aston Martin V8 Volante was first produced in 1978 in response to American demand for a convertible version of the AM V8 coupe which had been in production since 1972. It was based on the Oscar India version of the V8, and shared the same 5,340cc V8 engine which, via quadruple twin choke Weber carburettors, produced approximately 306bhp.Specially manufactured in 1979 for Peter de Savary, this car is in excellent condition all-round. The car is a particularly rare example being fitted with chrome bumpers. Paintwork is finished in blue with a matching blue hood and the interior is finished in cream leather with blue piping. As the car was custom-built for de Savary, it boasts a humidor on the transmission tunnel for his cigars! The dashboard is, as one would expect, finished in wood, but the steering wheel and top of the dash are in a matching blue - again all are in excellent condition. The V8 is described as being in superb order and power from the 5.3 litre engine is channelled through an automatic box. It comes with a current MoT test certificate valid until June next year and V5 certificate.
