Launched in 1949, the Karmann-built four-seater Cabriolet Beetle, or the Type 15 as it was designated by Volkswagen, became an instant success. This stylish Beetle based convertible had a hood of the highest quality was built by Wilhelm Karmann, a coach building company in Osnabruck, Germany. With a production life from 1949 to 1981, the Karmann Beetle never went out of fashion and remains an instantly recognisable icon of motoring to this day. Embraced from the man in the street to the rich and famous, including Yves Saint Laurent, Bridget Bardot and Pierre Cardin, it was based on the highest specification Deluxe Export versions of the VW Beetle; Wilhelm Karmann added a class-leading soft top hood mechanism which was not only easy to use but also highly durable, virtually free for drafts and leaks, and when erect, very quiet. This exceptional example presented here today is described by the vendor as excellent in every respect. Those who know these cars will appreciate the benefit of this fully restored car as, many thousands of pounds having been spent in 2005. BBT4VW in Belgium was responsible for the work undertaken, one of the most respected VW specialists in the world, and with over £20,000 worth of invoicing contained in the cars history file, its condition needs no further comment. The original left-hand drive specification of this car is completely in keeping with its origins and is reflected also by the six volt electrical system still in situ'.
