Lot 055: 1962/67 Lotus Elite S2

Collectors Cars, H&H Sales Limited (23 July 2008)

H&H are indebted to the vendor for the following description: "In 1956-57 the Le Mans 24 hour class winning Lotus XIs were powered by Coventry-Climax FWA engines and this Elite has the FWA engine originally fitted to Jack Westcott's Le Mans specification racing Lotus XI (chassis number 502) which crashed at Goodwood. Parts of that ex-Westcott XI were used in rebuilding this car to Special Equipment specification including twin Weber 40DCOE2 carburettors, ZF gearbox, Girling AR alloy front disc brakes, 4.2 diff, remote oil filter, 60-spoke wheels with 175 x 13-inch Cinturatos and a 4-branch exhaust (minus the two end silencers). The body is in very good condition in white primer, the nose panel has been replaced and alloy front bumpers fitted. It has a black glass rear screen, black side screens and a tinted windscreen. There are non-standard tubular cross braces on the front suspension, and the seats are period semi-recliner pattern. The engine runs but the clutch needs attention. The car was rebuilt to this configuration by Howard Pope and re-registered on 8th September 1967 with the chassis number LE 1967 HP. This chassis body unit with an Elite FWE engine was originally sold by Lotus on 14th February 1962 to L.J. Dawson-Damer, brother of the Earl of Portarlington, who was killed on 24th June 2000 when his F1 Lotus hit the finishing post gantry at Goodwood. We have letters confirming the history, 1974-75 MOT and tax disc, the original green logbook and continuation logbook issued in July 1974 when the car was registered to Mr J.S. Irving who had an extensive collection of military vehicles and engines from WW2 aircraft, tanks and submarines. He put the car into storage in 1976 after engine, clutch and brakes work was carried out by the Elite specialist Miles Wilkins at Fibreglass Services. The car has been carefully stored and has not been on the road since then. Also included are some spares and an Elite workshop manual.
