Lot 354: KMZ KMZ Dnepr 649cc Cossack 650 sidecar-drive outfit

The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show, Bonhams (18 October 2009)

The Dnepr is made at the Kyivsk Motosykletnyi Zavod in Ukraine, formerly a part of the USSR. Made in a number of variations, the whole range was based on the wartime BMW and Zundapp military cross-country machines, though little remains interchangeable with those today. A very strongly-built ohv, shaft-drive, flat-twin with interchangeable wheels and, importantly, reverse gear, many Dneprs are specified, as was this example, with a permanent two-wheel-drive arrangement complete with differential, enabling good cross-country performance and registration in the U.K. as a 'tricycle'. While of little appeal to 'race-replica' fans, the Dnepr has a devoted following and a history of appearances in films such as the Indiana Jones series and by military re-enactment groups. N452 FLN is in immaculate order, having been owned by a collector, and has just 745 miles registered and still has its 'running in' restrictors in place. Fitted with its leading-link forks from new and now with a well-engineered conversion to hydraulic front brake, it comes with a new tow-bar kit, its V5C and all of its papers and old MOTs since new. A charismatic but inexpensive machine.
