Lot 141: MG BGT V8

Annual Yuletide Classic+Collectors and Sports-Cars, Barons (12 December 2011)

In 1973 British Leyland launched one of its most ambitious cars the MGB GT V8. This new MGB variant offered true 'Q' car characteristics, a combination of understated looks and startling performance. The V8 MGB only ever came in fixed head GT form, and could be distinguished from the 4 cylinder model by the front and rear 'V8' badges and unique road wheels. At the heart of the car was the trusty, Buick designed Rover V8 as used in the then current Rover P6 range. The 3,528cc unit produced plenty of torque in order to power the car to a heady 125mph, the 0-60 dash coming up in just 7.7 secs. The car was relatively expensive compared to its rivals at the time, production levels were low and just 2,591 examples were made before production ended in 1976. This 1974 example was supplied new on 1st August 1974 by H. Pye and Sons of Mansfield, Notts (and still bearing their rear window sticker and bumper) to Mrs C Marriott of Bolsover, Derbyshire, it was to stay with her for the next 15 years, during which time she amassed a total of just over 9,000 miles! There is ample paperwork on file to support this mileage including the original Leyland 'Passport to Service' booklet and several service invoices and old Mot's. In 1989 the car passed to her son, who immediately placed it in storage for the next few years, amassing a further 500 miles mainly during the last 2 years of his ownership, before passing it to owner no 3,who was to gain rather more use from her over the next 6 years, during which time the mileage increased to some 37,500. In 2006, the car passed to a family friend, who over the next 5 years, covered about 2,000 miles bringing the total to 39,500! Due to business commitments and shortage of spare time, he has made the reluctant decision to part with the car. This is, without doubt, one of very few remaining, low mileage, unrestored and unmolested chrome bumper 'factory' V8GT's on the marker today. The car is offered complete with an MOT to November 2012 (No advisories) and a comprehensive history.
