Lot 155: Jaguar XK150 3.8 Litre Drophead Coupe

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

Manufactured on the 6th May 1960 and dispatched on the 17th May to Jaguar Cars, New York, U.S.A, this XK150 drophead coupe was delivered to its first owner Mr P.J. McCabe of Santa Clara, California. Finished in cream with a red hide interior this car is of particular interest as it still retains its original paint and interior and must be one of only a very small handful in this fantastic original condition. The red hide boasts a wonderful patina and is matched by the original cream paintwork which although showing signs of its age, gives this car a wonderful character that cannot be replicated. The car is all matching numbers as can be verified by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate which is supplied in the history file, along with a V5 document, US Automobile registration cards from the 1960s, various other period US documents as well as old MoT certificates and an Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook. Other period items that seldom remain with the car are found on 780 XUU: the rare and desirable original tool kit as well as the original Marshal fog lamps; the car is also fitted with its original manual overdrive gearbox from new. Although aesthetically the car retains much of its original countenance, the mechanics have recently been overhauled, including a new front wiring harness; the braking system has been upgraded and the front dampers and shock absorbers have also been replaced; the front suspension has had all the original rubber bushes removed and replaced. We are informed that the chassis is in very good original condition with no welding carried out, and that a full under-body sealer was recently applied. The engine was removed and completely stripped and all worn parts were replaced valves, valve guides, timing chains, pistons and piston rings &c. The original manual gearbox with overdrive was removed: both units were checked and found to be in good order; the clutch plate has also been replaced. The crankshaft has been removed and machined, and a new rear main oil seal fitted, and the engine head has been machined so it can run on unleaded fuel. Finally the carburettor system has also been overhauled and stripped down with new needles and springs fitted. The only change from original specification is the fitment of competition wire wheels with low profile tyres to help with road holding but the original wheels are still with the car and the original spare wheel is still fitted in the rear. With only 69,866 miles from new this is a magnificent original example of what has long been considered the best of the illustrious XK model range. The car remains effectively untouched and completely unmolested and aesthetically one of the most original Jaguars, exuding charm and character in abundance. The opportunity to acquire such a superb example in such fantastically correct original condition is unique.
