Lot 1332: HRD Vincent Rapide Series C and Steib S501 Combination
The close coupled QD Steib sidecar is a real enhancement to the bike and has a period brake system hydraulically linked to the bike. In 1972/73 then owner John Weatheritt restored both bike and sidecar using the services of Furness and Searle (ex Vincent works engineers) and Harper Engines for spares. Within the comprehensive history file is a copy of an article from MPH magazine describing KLX 436 and a subsequent successful Lands End to John O'Groats run, photographs are included of the bike at John O'Groats and of the bike in 1972 prior to restoration. Purchased by the current owner from a Cheffins sale in September 2002 (Lot 335) the Combination has seen sparing use since and has been on display in a private collection. In 2012 the owner decided to hand the bike over to V Twin Motorcycles Ltd and the well documented work carried out included a top end rebuild, new pistons and liners, rebuilding and attention to forks, suspension units, wheels, frame bushing, cycle parts etc etc. The vendor states that just 348 miles have been covered since and further running in would be prudent. Both machine and sidecar are in fine condition, the Steib S-501 being the sought after 'Zeppelin' shaped top of the range model. The bike fired up on inspection with that distinctive Vincent boom and appeared to run without fuss or undue mechanical noise, the current mileage is recorded as 3,057, this is post 1985 when the speedometer was re-zeroed, original mileage to this point is recorded by a previous owner. Offered for sale with a buff continuation logbook, V5C documentation, a letter from the previous owner chronicling long term ownership and rebuild in great detail and VOC magazine copy which features the machine. A hugely desirable combination with a comprehensive history file.
