Lot 142: Bentley S3 Saloon

Classic - Collectors and Sports Cars, Barons (28 October 2013)

Launched in 1956 alongside the R-R Silver Cloud, the Bentley S1 was the first modern Bentley to be aimed squarely at the owner driver. In 1959 the S2 introduced the all-new 6230cc V8 engine that would be the base for all Bentley power plants until the 1998 Arnage. The S Series/Silver Cloud would be the last model to sport a separate chassis, as the age of unitary construction was taking over. Despite the car's traditional mechanical design the S2 could reach 115mph and cruise on Europe's new motorways at high speed for long periods, eating up the miles with ease. In 1962 the S2 was replaced by the facelifted S3, which sported twin headlamps and smaller overriders, while the interior now had individual front seats in place of the split bench seat found in the S1/S2. Most cars also had air conditioning, electric windows and front seat belts. Offered here is an example of the S3 from the final year of production, which was repatriated to the UK in 1990. The V5 shows just four owners in 33 years, with the last registered keeper having the car for 11 years. This gentleman was a Wadham Stringer mechanic who had worked on Rolls-Royce cars for many years but was made redundant. A portion of his redundancy cheque was invested this S3 but, after 11 years and pressure from his wife, he sold the car to the current owner, who is a friend. Finished in black over silver with red hide interior, the car is described as an excellent example. It has covered less than 1000 miles over the last four years and is said, by the vendor, to be capable of driving to the South of France tomorrow. The car is offered with a new MoT and is obviously eligible for historic tax.
