Lot 144: Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

Classic - Collectors and Sports Cars, Barons (28 October 2013)

With a new styling particularly appealing to the younger generation of owners more prevalent from the 1960s onward, Rolls-Royce unveiled new models in 1980. These were designed to meet the increasingly strict safety, emissions and consumption legislation proliferating internationally. Austrian born Fritz Feller now heading the styling department had been responsible for the elegant coachwork, with uncluttered lines and significantly enlarged window areas. Developed on the floorpan of the Silver Shadow, the new cars showed a considerably improved ride and road holding, not least due to the new Girling automatic height control in combination with gas shock absorbers. As expected the cars were luxuriously appointed, with sumptuous leather seats and deep pile carpets giving the utmost comfort and a veneer covered fascia retaining a traditional appearance. There were many changes to the models during the eighteen year production period from 1980 to 1998 the longest for any standard Rolls-Royce or Bentley model. Also, there were many different models within the range. The range comprised the Silver Spirit (1980-89), Silver Spirit II (1990-93), Silver Spirit III (1994-95) and Silver Spirit (1996-98). However, within each of these periods there were significant changes. Between 1980 and 1989 there were just 8129 Silver Spirits built for world-wide consumption and a further 6238 LWB Silver Spurs. Offered here is a Silver Spirit from the penultimate year of production, which has covered a warranted 11,700 miles at the time of writing, with less than 400 miles being covered since the vendor acquired the car in 2009. On acquiring the car, the vendor sent it to Phantom Motor Cars Ltd. of Crondall. Surrey for a thorough check over and major service. A comprehensive breakdown of the works carried out, and the invoice for said works, is included in the history file. The file also includes a number of MoT certificates and a letter from the last owner, which states that he had owned the car from new, the full complement of owner's manuals, pre-delivery check list, warranty booklet and service booklet, showing the last Main Dealer service in 2009 at 11,368 miles, which ties in with the MoTs. All of this is contained within the original leather wallet. The car was originally supplied by Romans of Farnham. Finished in Pacific Blue with parchment hide, piped blue, the car is equipped with a number of options, which include fill door inserts of burr veneer, to match the door cappings and dash board. The car can only be described as being an exceptional specimen of the marque.
