Standard/Triumph S4 OHV

First seen in the 1953 Standard Eight the Standard-Triumph four cylinder engine was to remain in production until the demise of the Triumph marque in the 1980's. The new engine was typical of the mid-50's small overhead valve unit and initially was even available in identical sizes to the BMC A-Series (803cc and 948cc). Following the demise of the Standard Eight and Ten the engine found a new home in the Triumph Herald.

The small four cylinder quickly grew into a more impressive unit which could be used in the larger Herald 1200 and early Spitfire models. Other variants included the Herald 13/60, 1300 Saloon, and Dolomite range. Very late Spitfires used a 1500 version which finally broke the 100mph top-speed barrier.
