Gearing Up for La Crme de la Crme: The Bonhams Annual Quail Auction

Tue 26 Jun 2007

Each August an estimated 50,000 people from every corner of the globe descend upon a quaint seaside area of California for whats unofficially known as the 10-day Monterey Peninsula Car Week, or Pebble Beach Week. This hallowed week has become a must attend for any car enthusiast as it entails four concours delegance, two historic race events, two historic motoring tours, five auctions, two motoring art expos, and numerous private receptions and gatherings. Simply put, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Every year the best of the best come here to compete in historic judging and historic races, and the crowds are drawn to the opportunity to witness, experience and savor what is the most awesome gathering of historic vehicles any place on the planet. A standout among this delicious menu of activities is the Bonhams & Butterfields Auction of Important Collector Cars held at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.

Following the prestigious day-long Quail Motorsports Gathering, the Bonhams afternoon auction has combined with the Quail to become the signature event for the affluent motorsport aficionado. In fact, the audience demographics are astounding with 50 per cent having a net worth of $250$500 million.

With so many well-heeled international car enthusiasts converging on the Quail at once, the desire to take home an exclusive collector car can become quite competitive and bidding at the auction reflects this. However Bonhams, a 214-year old company that will be hosting its tenth Car Week auction this year, is no stranger to these unique circumstances and never fails to impress the buyers that come to expect the best.

One of the many highlights of last years sale was the ex-Jack Ensley/Pat OConnor Sebring 12-Hours no. 8 1956 Jaguar D-Type Shortnose that sold for over $2 million. This year, while Bonhams is still actively searching for worthy entries, consignments already include:

  1907 Packard Model 30 Runabout
The ex-President Herbert Hoover 1932 Cadillac 452B V-16 Imperial Fleetwood Limousine
1938 Talbot T120 Cabriolet by Figoni et Falaschi
The ex-Sydney Allard/Jack Fairman Le Mans 1952 Allard-Chrysler/Cadillac J2X racing roadster, offered for the first time since 1953
 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertible
And the above listed cars represent just a few among the varied and exquisite line-up Bonhams will offer.

From vintage roadsters and historic tourers to Formula 1 racers and muscle cars, the international Bonhams auction at Quail Lodge is sure to make history once again.
