Triumph TR family
|
Triumph launched the first model in its TR range in 1953, the TR2. The TR2 was well received by the motoring press and it quickly established a strong place in the British sports car market, this was the first model in a range destined to stay in production for many years. Improved TR3 and TR3A/B models appeared in 1955 and 1957 respectively which had more powerful engines, better brakes and even door handles on later models! These TR3 models were the last of the "side-screen TR's" and were replaced in 1961 by the Michelotti styled TR4. The TR4 featured modern styling, later TR4A's had independent rear suspension which introduced improved ride comfort. A new six cylinder engine was introduced in 1967 and renamed the TR5 (or TR250 for the twin-carb US version). The TR5 had mechanical fuel injection, a first for a British sports car. Another restyled model, the TR6, appeared in 1968 and proved to be the most successful TR model of all, despite its dated mechanical design. The TR6 eventually made way for a totally new car in 1976, the TR7. Only available as a Fixed Head Coupe at first, the wedge shaped TR7 found a new breed of TR owner and remained in production until 1981. A V8 engined TR8 was built for one year only (1980-81) and was aimed at the lucrative US market, although some UK cars were also produced. |
