Overview

One of the lesser-known Anglo-American Sports Hybrids, the Batten used a shortened Ford chassis of the 1932-33 period, with a current V8 engine boosted from 80 to 97bhp.  The frame was underslung and shortened by 16in (406mm), being also 8.5in (216mm) narrower at the rear.  With a weight of only 2182lb (942kg) performance was spectacular, with a top speed of over 100mph (160km/h).  Most Battens used Ford-type transverse suspension, but one or two had ifs.  The first cars had stark door-less 2-seater bodies, but later examples had more civilised sports tourer drophead coachwork.  In 1937 a new model appeared which was the only one to break away completely from Ford styling.  It had a very low 2-seter body, cycle-type wings, a sloping grill and headlamps faired into the bonnet sides.  Top speed was 118mph (190km/h).  Probably no more than one was made, and overall production of Battens did not exceed ten.
