The first of the high performance Sierras arrived in 1983, the XR4i. This was an affordable car with the performance of the best of the big saloons. By 1985 the XR4i was toned down to give it wider appeal and the more discreet XR4x4 was introduced. In the US the XR4i was thought to have considerable merit and was turned into the Merkur XR4Ti. Shortly even these were capped by the very quick Cosworth Sierra and later the RS500, both offering supercar performance. Later Cosworths transformed into the Sierra Sapphire.
