Although similar in concept to its six-cylinder forbears the new SL range was new. There were extensive body changes, trailing arm rear suspension and powered by the 3.5-litre V8 and the 4.5 in the US. The SLC was introduced a little later to give more passenger space with 14in inserted in the middle. Larger engines came in 1980 at 3.8 and 5-litres. Always very comfortable and well powered these cars were heavy and closer to the sedans than a sports car.
