• For a hundred years Renault has been pre-eminent in the manufacture of cars of every degree. From primitive voiturettes to the winner of the first grand prix in 1906, from Edwardian giants to fuel-sipping economy saloons like the Clio, and from cars that epitomised motoring for the millions to extravagant one-off designs that rivalled Bentley and Bugatti, Renault not only exemplified the French motor industry but became the best-selling make in Europe.
• Renault’s radical reputation was established with its six-wheeled trans-Sahara car of 1923. It foresaw the multi-purpose vehicle in 1945 with the Juvaquatre taxi, and demonstrated its technical proficiency with the Etoile Filante turbine car of 1956.
• Approaching its centenary, Renault looked to the future with revolutionary concept cars. In 1987 the Vesta 2 established a world fuel consumption record, and the Megane of 1988, Laguna of 1990, and Scenic of 1991 took design initiatives which will set the pattern of the 21st century.

• AUTHOR: Motoring correspondent of The Sunday Times for fourteen years, Eric Dymock trained as an engineer in Glasgow, worked in the motor trade, wrote about cars for local newspapers, and joined the road test staff of The Motor in 1962, later covering Grand Prix motor racing for The Guardian.
• He was motoring correspondent of Town (Haymarket) 1966-1968, News of the World 1973-1975, and The Observer 1980-1983. His books include biographies of Jackie Stewart and Jim Clark, The Guinness Guide to Grand Prix Motor Racing, Post-War Sports Cars, The Sprites and Midgets, and definitive histories of BMW, Rover, and Honda in the UK.
