Whether it be Kay Petre and Gwenda Hawkes trading fastest laps at Brooklands in the 1930s, Sheila Van Damm and Pat Moss collecting numerous rally trophies during the 1950s / 1960s or Desire Wilson and Michele Mouton winning an Aurora F1 Grand Prix race and multiple WRC Rallies respectively in the 1980s, women have a proud motorsport tradition. However, the number of ‘girls’ competing in historic racing and rallying is disappointingly low, a situation that the recently formed Racy Ladies organisation hopes to remedy.

Beginning with a series of women-only, testosterone-free track days, Racy Ladies wants to encourage ‘girls’ of all ages and skill levels to learn (or hone) the art of driving fast in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. To this end, participants may attend in everything from road cars to purpose-built racers (though, the former must be road legal and the latter capable of satisfying a MSA scrutineer). Circuit sessions will be streamed according to the speed of the drivers and their cars with plenty of respect being given to ‘track virgins’.

The first Racy Ladies track day will be held on Sunday November 9th 2008 at the very safe and centrally located Rockingham Speedway, Northamptonshire.

ARDS Registered Instructors will be giving in-car tuition and trackside tips throughout the day, while the lunch break will allow competitors to compare notes and experiences. Those whose cars are more akin to pack horses than thoroughbreds can still enjoy white knuckle rides as passengers aboard a variety of exciting machinery including two Caterham cars.

Although, helmets and other necessary safety equipment are provided as part of the £199 (including VAT) per person cost, a representative from Demon Tweeks will be present to advise anyone who gets bitten by the racing bug. A professional photographer will also be in attendance to capture those moments of personal glory. The event is open to any woman holding a full UK driving licence. Family, husbands, boyfriends and friends are all welcome to come and watch.

Racy Ladies is sponsored by H&H Ltd, John Clark Motor Group, Demon Tweeks, Fiskens, Black & White Garage and Gilbart-Smith Associates. For more information on Racy Ladies or to book a place on the November 9th track day go to
