In 1978 Saab replaced its successful 99 range with the new 900 model. The 900 offered a longer wheelbase than the outgoing 99 range and featured modern, sleeker styling and still with front wheel drive. The standard 900 came with a choice of either two or four door saloon or three and five door hatch-back versions.

All 900 models featured a 2.0 litre four cylinder overhead camshaft engine and all-round disc brakes, power steering and the option of automatic transmission.

The last model sold in the UK was the Ruby Edition, 150 were produced.  Convertibles were sold in the USA until 1994.
