Despite the unassuming name "Princess 1500" this new 1974 Vanden Plas was little more than an Austin Allegro with a fancy grille and interior. With hindsight this description seems unkind, perhaps it is best to look at this car as a last brave attempt to offer a "mini Rolls-Royce" for the masses.
The Princess used the four door Allegro body shell with a modified front, to incorporate the distinctive Vanden Plas grille. Inside the Princess 1500 featured a beautifully finished walnut dash, rear picnic tables and leather seats. Mechanically the Princess 1500 made good use of the standard Allegro running gear. Production ended in 1980, along with the Vanden Plas marque, although this name lived on for many years as trim level (in the same way that Ford used Ghia).
