Overview
Produced: 1972-1974
Types: Saloon,5 seats
Estate,5 seats

The 412 was launched in 1972 to replace the 411 which had a bad reputation because of a lot of problems. The 412 was nearly a complete rebuild of the 411. New body, it meant many parts changed, even the roof was maked straighter not that curved as on 411.

The 412 had, in Europe, 4 different engines. Two 1.7 litres and two 1.8 litres with carburator or fuel injection. In US also with EGR on the 1.7 injection engine.  As options there was just a few things, like air conditioning, servo assisted brakes, tinted windows, some different wheels and automatic gears. The estate was delivered as a 3 door and the sedan or coupe as a 2 or 4 door.

Some parts of the 411/412 were used in the VW/Porsche 914 like the engines and some more parts.  The 411/412 range have nothing to do with the old beetle and bus, when they arrived it was completely new ideas and a desperate attempt from VW to get some more buyers since their old models didnt do to well...... and this ended as a flop and gave birth to a radical change and then the Golf, Passat and Polo were born.
