Still growing, the evergreen 911 grew again in engine size in 1972, all 911's now using a 2.7 litre base engine. Handling gradually improved as new model years came, but still the 911 used the tried and tested rear air-cooled engine layout. By 1973 all 911's had at least 210bhp and most could reach 140mph.

The 911 continued to develop throughout the 70's, in 1977 the cars gained a new 3.0 litre version of the same old engine, along with deeper, 5mph bumpers and flared wheel arches. During the 1980's no self-respecting stock broker was complete without a 911, and Porsche enjoyed an enviable sales record as a result of Yuppie-mania.
